• people were building up massive debt because they couldn't sell their house quickly enough in order to release locked-up equity

• people who were moving to another location, needed to sell before they moved, but couldn't sell quickly enough - and consequently were being forced to rent in their new location AND pay for their original mortgage on a house which they weren't even living in!

People were being repossessed, because they couldn't sell their house quickly enough to pay back the mortgage lenders.
